SWMM3, SWMM4 Conversion Tools for SWMM5

Conversion Tools for the SWMM 3, 4 and 5 Programs for SWMM 5.0.017

You must make a few text editing changes to get a good SWMM 5 file from your Visual SWMM Runoff data sets.

Step 1: Get rid of the leading 0.000000 on your H1 line. I am chagrined that I can't remember what the 0.0000 are for in Visual SWMM. You do not need it for SWMM 4 and definitely do not need it for SWMM 5.

H1 0.000000 1, '7#1', '7', 0.0, 350., 142.8055, 12.8, 0.04, 0.04, 0.20, 2., 5., 50., 10., 0.00115, 0,
H1 0.000000 1, '7#2', '7', 0.0, 260., 88.4516, 24., 0.048, 0.04, 0.20, 2., 5., 50., 10., 0.00115, 0,
H1 0.000000 1, '6#1', '6', 0.0, 155., 33.4478, 3.4, 0.068, 0.04, 0.20, 2., 5., 50., 10., 0.00115, 0,

H1 1, '7#1', '7', 0.0, 350., 142.8055, 12.8, 0.04, 0.04, 0.20, 2., 5., 50., 10., 0.00115, 0,
H1 1, '7#2', '7', 0.0, 260., 88.4516, 24., 0.048, 0.04, 0.20, 2., 5., 50., 10., 0.00115, 0,
H1 1, '6#1', '6', 0.0, 155., 33.4478, 3.4, 0.068, 0.04, 0.20, 2., 5., 50., 10., 0.00115, 0,

Step 2: Get the two needed converters from this website:

http://swmmconversion.ning.com

Step 3: Convert the modified data file to SWMM 44h in the DOS command prompt:

xptoEPA4_2005 yourFile.dat yourFile.epa

Step 4: Use a text editor again and get rid of the # symbol in the subcatment name. In the file you sent me subcatchments 71 and 72 now go to OUTLET 7:

H1 1 '7#1 ' '7 ' 350.00000 142.80550 12.80000 0.04000
H1 1 '7#2 ' '7 ' 260.00000 88.45160 24.00000 0.04800
H1 1 '6#1 ' '6 ' 155.00000 33.44780 3.40000 0.06800

H1 1 '71 ' '7 ' 350.00000 142.80550 12.80000 0.04000
H1 1 '72 ' '7 ' 260.00000 88.45160 24.00000 0.04800
H1 1 '61 ' '6 ' 155.00000 33.44780 3.40000 0.06800

Step 5: Run the VB based SWMM 3,4 to SWMM 5 Converter to convert the .epa file to a SWMM 5 input data file.

Now, you have a working SWMM 5 input file.

Sorry for the extraneous steps,

Regards,
Robert Dickinson

Along with the program on Mitch's URL
www.dynsystem.com/netstorm/cdmuswmm.htm just remember these three facts:

1. It is written as a DOS Fortran program so it does not like directory
names with spaces,
2. It will not extract the x,y coordinates for you from the xp-swmm
file, and
3. It will convert the .DAT file from XP-SWMM and not the .xp file -
you need to export the .dat file from XP before you run the converter.
